Levels of Senior Care

Levels of care are created for assisted living directors to hire staff members that can provide the special needs that residents require. This also helps categorize the residents based on their needs and group them all in one wing to maximize the staff available to assist them.

Independent Living

Independent Living services are offered to those who are able to take care of themselves and live independently. Staff members are on standby when they need assistance with some activities. They live in their own room with all the necessities and they have access to various amenities a senior community has for them.

Assisted Living

Assisted Living services are usually for those who value independence but needs help with their daily activities. A senior community’s licensed staff are experts in creating daily plans suited for the residents. The service plan usually includes assisting them with bathing, medication, to preparing activities for arts and crafts, gardening, and more.

Assisted Living can be qualified into two levels:

Lower Levels of Care:

This is for residents who only need minimal assistance. They can still move without a special staff to help by walking on their own or an assistive device like a wheelchair. Residents under low level still have an active mind and can make decisions and preferences on their own. They may, however, call for assistance in some tasks like fastening buttons, getting ready in the morning, or some help in the shower. Otherwise, they are independent in their hygiene care and can manage their toileting needs. Nurses may administer regular medications or supplements, but they do not require extensive and complex medical monitoring.

Higher Levels of Care:

This is designed for residents who need close monitoring and unmediated assistance from caregivers. Residents in this level will need help in walking or ambulating from one place to another. They also need extensive assistance in dressing, bathing, or toileting. They may show some signs of memory loss and will need verbal and physical cues to manage their day successfully. Residents in higher level care should have designated staff to monitor their health, manage medications, chronic pain, and other safety concerns.

Memory Care

You should consider senior living memory care if it’s a challenge for the family to care for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Memory care living provides a pleasant environment, and allows experienced staff members to conduct effective therapies, that are meant for the special needs of people with memory loss. Staff are highly trained to care and attend to residents’ daily activities, and engage them in therapeutic tasks that help keep their minds at work.
