Questions To Ask

About The Services

  • Does this community provide the type of assistance I need?
  • What amenities are available?
  • What does the daily activity schedule look like?
  • What are the security features?
  • Are you pet friendly?
  • Are the staff always available 24/7?
  • How about visiting rules and trips outside the community?
  • Do you provide transportation and assistance to nearby stores or doctor’s offices?

Checking The Grounds

  • What are the grounds like?
  • Are there any outdoor areas and walking paths?
  • Do I like the view of the greenery?
  • What are the indoor common areas like? Is it clean and comfortable?
  • How do the staff interact with the residents?
  • How do the residents interact with one another?
  • Do I like the look and feel of the community?

Checking The Apartments

  • How many rooms are available and in what sizes?
  • How many residents currently live there?
  • Do walkers and wheelchairs fit in the doorways and hallways?
  • Are there elevators available?
  • Is the layout well-planned such that it’s easy to navigate?
  • Is there a functional kitchen inside the room?
  • What can I fit in my room? Can I bring some of my own furniture?
  • Are the community and rooms light or dark? Is there natural sunlight coming in?
  • Is there enough closet space?
  • Are there extra rooms or beds for family visitors?
  • Is the furniture sturdy and well-made?
  • Do I like a porch or balcony in my apartment?
  • Is there secured WiFi?
  • Are there accessibility features like a walk-in shower and grab bars?
  • Any other additional security and safety features?

Trying The Food

  • Do they prepare healthy and fresh meals?
  • Are the menus varied?
  • Do they have any of your favorite items?
  • Can they cook special requests?
  • Is food always available? Or is there a time limit?
  • Are you allowed to bring in guests?

Meeting The Staff

  • What is the staff to resident ratio?
  • Are the staff friendly, helpful, and always available when you need them?
  • How knowledgeable are they?
  • Are they trained in geriatric care?
  • How often does the staff perform periodic assessments?
  • How do I ask for assistance from staff?
  • How are medications ordered and replenished?
  • Are there therapies (like occupational, speech, and physical) conducted on-site?
  • What kinds of social activities and events are available?
  • Is there a daily schedule we need to follow?
  • Are there religious or cultural services and programs?
  • Are there rules that the resident needs to comply with?
  • Does the community care not only for their residents but for their staff members as well?
  • How does the community respond to emergencies?

Verifying The Costs

  • Does the contract disclose all the healthcare and supportive services and fees?
  • What about additional charges for services?
  • What is the procedure for admission and discharge? How much are the fees?
  • Do they issue refunds?
  • Is there a downpayment needed for reservation?
  • How long is the contract? What happens when the resident decides to leave before the contract ends?
  • If the resident is temporarily away or admitted to the hospital, do you continue to charge fees?
  • What are the modes of payment?
  • Is there a tiered payment plan available? What services are included in each tier?
  • Does the community accept Medicare, Medicaid, or other low-income subsidy programs, as a form of payment for services?
  • Do they generate a paper or electronic bill?
